Moving to a custom domain

You started on klixey.com/your-slug. You're ready for your own URL. This is the order of operations — what to plan, what to set, what to test, and what to tell your customers.

Quick answer

Make sure your plan supports custom domains, decide on the domain, add it under Store → Custom domain, copy the DNS record Klixey shows you into your registrar, wait for verification, then test the new URL end to end. Old links to klixey.com/your-slug redirect to the new domain automatically. Klixey handles the certificate, the redirect, and security for you.

Before you start

You'll have an easier time if these are in hand:

  • A plan that includes custom domains (Business lifetime, Pro, or Scale). → Plans · Managing your Klixey plan.
  • A domain you own at a registrar (Namecheap, GoDaddy, Google Domains, Cloudflare, etc.).
  • Access to the DNS settings at that registrar — you'll be adding one record.
  • A quiet window to make the switch. The change itself is fast; the testing afterward is what takes time.

You can do this any time

Your klixey.com/your-slug URL keeps working as a fallback even after the custom domain is live. Visitors hitting the old URL get redirected automatically. There's no downtime to plan around — but there is an email to your audience to think about (see step 3).

The playbook

1. Confirm your plan supports it

Open Workspace settings → Subscription and check your plan. If you're on Starter or Growth, upgrade first — the Custom domain page will show an upgrade prompt instead of the setup form.

2. Decide on the domain

You can use either:

  • A subdomain like shop.yourbrand.com or store.yourbrand.com. Easiest to set up. Your main website keeps living at the apex.
  • The apex domain itself, like yourbrand.com. Doable but slightly more involved at the registrar.

If you're starting from scratch, a subdomain is the safe pick.

3. Tell your audience the URL is changing

A short note to your existing customers — by email, by social, in your community — saves you support tickets later. Something like: "Our storefront is moving to shop.yourbrand.com. Old links will still work, but the new URL is the canonical one."

4. Add the domain in Klixey

Open Store → Custom domain, type the domain you want to use, and Klixey shows you the DNS record to copy into your registrar.

5. Add the DNS record at your registrar

The exact steps depend on your registrar. We have step-by-step recipes (with screenshot-level detail) for the common ones — Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, and Squarespace.

Copy the values from your Klixey settings page, not from a tutorial

The record values shown in your Custom domain page are the canonical ones. If a tutorial somewhere lists different values, trust your settings page. If you're on Cloudflare, make sure the orange-cloud proxy is off for this record.

6. Wait for verification

Klixey checks DNS periodically and flips the status as it confirms each step. The pill on your Custom domain page moves through:

  • Pending — Klixey is looking for the record.
  • Verified — record found, certificate is being issued.
  • Active — your domain is live.

Usually under 30 minutes. Sometimes a few hours, depending on your registrar's DNS speed.

7. Test the new URL end to end

Once the status is Active, open the new URL in a fresh browser tab (or an incognito window) and walk through:

  • Storefront loads at the root of the new domain — shop.yourbrand.com, no /your-slug after it.
  • A product page loads — click into any product and confirm the URL is clean.
  • Checkout works — go through a purchase as a customer would. Use a real card with a small-amount test product, or a Stripe test card if you're still in test mode.
  • The customer portal worksshop.yourbrand.com/portal should load.
  • Access emails carry the new URL — buy something as a customer and confirm the access link in the email points at your custom domain.

8. Old links redirect automatically

Anyone hitting klixey.com/your-slug/... gets bumped to the same path on your custom domain. Bookmarks, shared links, the link in your bio yesterday — they all keep working. → Slug redirects

What customers see at the end

A clean URL that's yours.

  • They visit shop.yourbrand.com and your store loads — no Klixey URL in sight.
  • Customer-portal sessions are kept separate per domain. Someone who was logged in at klixey.com/your-slug/portal may be asked to sign in again at shop.yourbrand.com/portal. That's expected and won't confuse most customers — they only ever see the new URL.
  • The sign-in flow stays loginless: a customer types their email, gets a one-click link, and lands in their portal. → Loginless self-service

Common things to tighten before you launch

Run through this on switch day:

  • [ ] Bio link updated — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter/X, LinkedIn. All the places that link to your store.
  • [ ] Email signature — if you link to your store from your sign-off, update it.
  • [ ] Social posts pinned to the top of each profile — update the URL in the pinned post.
  • [ ] Ads and marketing copy — any active campaign pointing at the old URL.
  • [ ] Embed codes and partner links — wherever someone else has linked you, ask them to update.
  • [ ] Test on mobile — most of your traffic is mobile. Walk through the storefront on a phone.

You don't have to chase every old link

The redirects do the work. The above list is about looking polished — when someone shares your URL today, you want it to be the new one. Old links scattered across the internet will keep working forever.

After launch

  • Most issues are DNS-related. If verification is stuck, the record at your registrar usually isn't pointing where you think. Re-check it against your Custom domain settings page. → Troubleshooting · DNS recipes
  • A short DNS hiccup won't take your store offline. If your registrar has a brief outage while your domain is Active, Klixey gives you a grace window before reverting to a failed state.
  • To remove the domain later — there's a Remove button on the Custom domain page. Your storefront reverts to klixey.com/your-slug. → Custom domains
  • To swap one custom domain for another — remove the old one, add the new one, repeat the DNS step. You can do this any time.

Removing a domain doesn't redirect the old domain to Klixey

If you remove a custom domain and customers still have it bookmarked, their browser will show a "domain not found" error — Klixey stops responding to that domain immediately. Either keep it connected, or set up a redirect at your registrar yourself.
