Membership access
When a customer subscribes to a membership, Klixey hands them the keys to every product in the bundle. When the membership ends — cancelled, payment failed, refunded — Klixey takes those keys back. The rules around when access is granted, what survives, and what gets revoked are worth understanding before you sell.
Quick answer
A successful first payment unlocks every product in the bundle. The customer sees them in their portal under the membership. If the membership ends, Klixey revokes membership-granted access to bundled items — but anything the customer bought standalone, or that they got from a different active membership, stays unlocked. Changes to the bundle (adding or removing a product) take effect immediately for all current members.
How the bundle unlocks
The moment a customer's first payment goes through, Klixey grants access to every product in the bundle. The customer sees them in two places:
- The membership detail page in their portal lists every bundled product with an access indicator. Tapping a row jumps them straight into that course's lessons or community feed.
- The portal home lists each unlocked item where it normally lives (courses under Courses, communities under Communities, and so on).
How access works for each kind of bundled product
| Bundled product | What unlocks |
|---|---|
| Course | The customer is enrolled. They see the course in their portal and can watch every lesson. |
| Community | The customer is added as a Member of the community. They can read posts, write posts (if you allow it), comment, like, and see the leaderboard. |
| Digital download | The customer gets the download link in their portal and via email — same as if they'd bought the download directly. |
Member-approval still applies
If a community in the bundle has member approval required turned on, bundling doesn't bypass it. New members land in the pending-approval queue and you'll need to approve them like you would any other joiner. See Creating a community for the approval setting.
Linked courses inside a bundled community
If you've linked other courses to a bundled community (so that joining the community auto-enrolls members in those courses), those linked courses still apply to membership-granted community joins. But the linked-course access comes from the community, not from the membership itself — same rules as a customer who joined the community directly.
Free trials
If your membership has a free trial, trial members get full access to the bundle during the trial — same as a paying member. The only difference is that the first charge doesn't happen until the trial ends.
If they cancel during the trial, access stops the moment the trial would have rolled into a paid period. They never get charged.
→ See Pricing your products for setting up trials.
What happens when access ends
A membership ends for a handful of reasons:
- The customer cancelled and the paid period ran out.
- A renewal payment failed and they didn't update their card before the grace period expired.
- You refunded a payment.
- You suspended the customer manually.
When access ends, Klixey revokes membership-granted access to every bundled item. The customer:
- Loses access to bundled courses.
- Is removed from bundled communities (or marked inactive there, depending on the community).
- Stops being able to access digital downloads that were unlocked only through the membership.
What they keep, even after the membership ends:
- Standalone access. If the customer also bought a bundled course directly (a separate purchase from the membership), they keep access to that course. Klixey only takes back the access this membership granted.
- Access from another active membership. If they're subscribed to a second membership that includes the same course, that membership's access continues.
You can think of it as: Klixey only revokes the access this membership granted. Everything else stays exactly as it was.
This is by design
A customer who once paid for a course directly shouldn't lose that course because their separate membership lapsed. Standalone access is a separate transaction with its own life.
Updating the bundle while members are active
Changes to the bundle take effect immediately for all current members.
| You do this | Members see |
|---|---|
| Add a product to the bundle | Every current member instantly gets access to the new product. It shows up on their membership detail page and in their portal. |
| Remove a product from the bundle | Every current member loses membership-granted access to the removed product. (Standalone access stays — see above.) |
Tell members before you change the bundle
Members are paying you for the current contents of the bundle. Adding things is usually well-received; removing them can feel like a downgrade. A short email or community post before you remove something keeps things honest.
Pausing a membership
If a customer's underlying subscription is paused, access pauses with it. They can't open the bundled products while the membership is paused. When they resume, access comes back automatically — they don't lose their progress in courses or their position in communities.
Refunds
If you refund a membership payment, that period's access is revoked. The customer:
- Loses access to every bundled item the membership unlocked.
- Keeps anything they own standalone or through another active membership.
If you only want to refund the latest payment but keep the customer subscribed going forward, refund just that charge in Stripe — the membership itself stays active and access continues. If you want to end the membership entirely, refund and cancel.
→ See Refunds & disputes for the full refund workflow.
Failed payments and the grace window
When a renewal payment fails:
- The customer's status moves to past due.
- Access continues during a grace window so they can fix the card without losing access.
- They receive emails asking them to update their payment method.
If they update the card and the next charge succeeds, access continues uninterrupted. If the grace window expires without a successful payment, the membership ends and Klixey revokes bundle access.
→ See When a payment fails for the full grace-window picture.
Who on your team can manage member access?
Anyone with Owner or Admin can issue refunds, suspend customers, and resume them. Editors can edit the membership bundle itself (adding and removing products), but billing actions are owner/admin. Viewers can see customers but not act on them. See Roles & permissions.
Common situations
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Member cancels mid-month | Access continues until the end of the paid period, then revokes. |
| Member's card fails and they don't update it | Grace window keeps access on briefly; if the grace expires, access revokes. |
| You add a new course to the bundle | Every current member gets access to it immediately. |
| You remove a course from the bundle | Every current member loses access to it immediately (unless they own it standalone). |
| Member buys a bundled course standalone before subscribing to the membership | They have two access paths — losing the membership doesn't lose the course. |
| Member subscribes to two memberships that both include the same course | They have two access paths — losing one membership keeps the course unlocked through the other. |
| Trial member cancels during trial | Access ends at the moment the trial would have rolled into a paid period. No charge happens. |
| You suspend a member manually | All membership-granted access revokes immediately. |
| You resume a suspended member | Access comes back. |
| You refund a member's payment | Access for that period revokes. |
Tips
- Sell the bundle, not the contents. Members rarely use 100% of what's inside — they pay for the whole thing because the value-vs-price math works out. Reinforce that in your copy.
- Treat the bundle as a promise. Once members are paying, the bundle's contents are part of the deal. Changes — additions or removals — are a communication event, not a quiet update.
- Use access instructions for the parts that don't fit in a product. Office hours, monthly workshops, member-only discounts elsewhere. Anything that lives outside the bundled products themselves goes in the access instructions field.
